JennyMoore beats her mum Elaine to top prize in Festival

Teare and Dunn win last mixed doubles of 2021 season Castletown Bowling Club hosted the Wilfrid Quayle mixed doubles on Sunday with the competition at- tracting a fine entry of 44 pairs. The eventual winners were Marown pair Rebecca TeareandPaulDunn, taking a hard-earned win over Sue Gawne (Onchan) and Andy Kennish (Peel). In the early stages of the final neither pairing were able to build a lead with the score tiedat 12-12aftereight ends. Teare and Dunn then startedtotakecontrol of the game going on to win seven of the last nine ends to run out 21-16 winners to take the last mixed doubles title of the season. Losing out 16-21 at the semi-final stage were the home green pairing of Kath Kinley and Dean Kinley to thewinningpair,whilehus- bandandwifeAlec(Peel)and Philippa Taylor (Marown) were defeated 12-21 by Gawne andKennish. Falling at the quarter-fi- nal stagewereGraceGawne (Onchan) and Kevin Firth (Douglas) who lost out 18-21 totheTaylors.SouthRamsey pairKimHargravesandSte- fanKellyweredefeated15-21 byGawne andKennish. 2020winnersLynBolton (South Ramsey) and Trevor Quayle (Port St Mary) were well beaten 11-21 by Teare and Dunn, whi le Jenny Moore and James Teare (SouthRamsey)werepipped at thepost20-21byKathKin- ley andDeanKinley. The presentation was made by Castletown club member Hilary Kermode who thanked everyone who had entered, the green keepers, alongwiththeclub members who had helped with the smooth running of thecompetitionthroughout the day. Gaut booked her placed in thefinalwithasolid21-12win over TracyWraight (Winder- mereBC),whileCottonended thechallengeofSarahWeaver (Wrockwardine Wood) with a 21-15 win. Wrockwardine WoodisnearTelfordinShrop- shire. Gaut progressed in the quarter-finalswitha21-18win over Kaye Coulthard (Cradley Sports&Social),Wraightbeat SharonGadd(Cononley)21-19. Itwas a familyaffair in the final of thewomen’sSeptem- ber Festival betweenSouth Ramseymother anddaughter ElaineandJennyMoore. Both had one festival title to their name going into the fi- nal, so it was a case of who would have the family brag- ging rights at the end of it. Jenny’spreviouswinwasin June2016,whilemumElaine’s was more recent in Septem- ber 2018. On this occasion it proved tobeJenny’sday, followingup herrecentachievementwhen winning the British Senior Merit - coming through a top field in Manchester to prove she is one of the game’s lead- ing female exponents. With the green having changed pace in the two hours since they had been on the green for the semi-finals, Jenny crucially won the toss and played a round peg mark off the edge of the crowd, winning the first eight ends to punish Elaine to full effect as she scored four doubles to take an almost unassailable 17-5 lead. Jennyperformedbrilliant- ly, leadingwell,andevenwhen Elainedidcountwithherfirst bowl Jenny would respond to beat hermother’s bowl. When Elaine did get in there was an ironic cheer, Ballaugh Bowling Club held the32ndeditionoftheKeenan FourseventtheSundaybefore last. There were 35 pairs en- tered, theweather being fine, starting cloudybut improving throughout the day. In the top half of the draw, the first quarter-final was an all-South Ramsey affair, with Alan Moore and Glynn Har- graves taking on Stefan Kelly and Stuart Marshall. A tight gameensuedwith17acrossaf- ter 13 ends, beforeMoore and Hargraves went on to seal the win21-18. The second quarter-fi- nal was between Bob Clark (Castletown) and David Brad-
